The story opens with young Chloe being made to go down to the basement where the scary ghost lives. She is so traumatised by the experience that her mother and father agree to move to a place where there are no basements. Then the story cuts to twelve years later and 15 year old Chloe's lives in an apartment with a housekeeper. Her mother died when she was 8, and her father works overseas. Chloe seems to have forgotten about her ghostly friends.
Chloe is a late starter as far as hitting puberty - on the day her period arrives she starts to see people who aren't there including a man with horrific burns who chases her at school trying to talk to her. Chloe is totally freaked and runs from him screaming. The school staff has to tackle Chloe, sedate her and she's taken by ambulance to a hospital before being transferred to Lyle House, a group home for kids with mental issues. There she is diagnosed as a schizophrenia and drugged.
Very quickly Chloe notices that some very strange events are situations are occurring in the school, not only with herself, but also with the other kids. And no matter how much she tries not to believe it is happening to her, Chloe sees more ghosts. Gradually the secrets everyone is hiding spills out, connections are made, and soon nothing is as it was thought to be. But with secrets.... there are always people who want to keep them quiet.
A dash of horror, a touch of possible romance and a big dollop of mystery make for a tasty treat. It isn't until just before the exasperating ending that you realise there is more going on than you at first suspected. I don't like books that leave you really hanging with no conclusion to get you to buy the next in the series.
