Retired CID Officer Paul Brenner is called on by his superior to return to Vietnam to find a North Vietnamese solder who witnessed an American Captain murdering an American Lieutenant in 1968. The Vietnamese soldier wrote a letter to his family about the incident. When an American soldier gets a hold of the letter, it eventually finds its way to the American government. As Paul's investigation moves closer to its resolution, he realizes how much this murder means to the American government. His task is daunting but he receives help from the beautiful and mysterious expat Susan Weber.
The beginning and ending of the book focus on this issue while the middle strays more into the realm of Paul's past tours of duty in Vietnam in 1968 and 1972, his memories of his tours as he passes through or revists former battle fields and the glimpse of Vietnam of today.
I found this story compelling, both for the mystery and for Paul's story.
