Phryne is off to see a special performance of Ruddigore, a lesser-known G&S operetta. Then the character playing Sir Ruthven collapses onstage, and his understudy falls ill soon after. Phryne is called upon to investgate and comes across orphaned babies with birthmarks, hauntings by the malevolent ghost of a long-dead actress, and a trap meant to kill Phryne that squashes the stage prompter instead. Phryne is assisted by her latest lover, Lin Chung, who she rescued when he and his grandmother were attacked by thugs.
I always enjoy Phryne books, they are fun!
