Feral City by Rosie Scott

"Feral City is the city of our future, its centre a wasteland peopled by addicts, violent gangs and the homeless. In a gesture of defiant optimism, two sisters - one a warrior, the other a survivor - open a bookshop in the heart of this decaying city. Their bizarre and moving story mirrors the fragile balance between defeat and courage."

I always think of urban wars, post apopolyptic stories as being set in the US rather than New Zealand and in this case the setting added to the sense dislocation.I enjoyed the excerpts from other books that Faith quoted and her feelings about reading..."Reading released the lovely rich voices of the past into my world, and filled it with colour and dreams." A strange book that I can see will stick with me for some time.
