The book begins with Bella's birthday, and she gets a near-fatal papercut, resulting in the Cullens having a burning desire to feed on her. Edward realizes that he is turning Bella into a danger magnet, so he breaks her heart and leaves her. Because of this, Bella becomes depressed and zombie-like for months, until she decides she would do anything to see Edward again. However, Jacob Black is back, and has new secrets- he turns into a werewolf. An evil vampire returns to Forks, meaning Bella is in danger.
