Dogs and Goddesses by Jennifer Crusie

Abby Richmond comes to Summerville, Ohio, to sell a bakery that she has just inherited from her grandmother. Somehow she ends up taking her Newfoundland to the newly opened Kammani Gula dog-obedience class that is being held at the local college. There she meets Daisy Harris, an IT person, and History Professor Shar Summer, each with their dog. During the meeting they drink some of Kammani’s special “tonic” and end up quite tipsy and firm friends. However, there is more, Abby, Daisy, and Shar start to hear dogs talking, each discovers that they have a unique power, and each finds herself a love interest – one of whom is a god no less. They also find out that they are being dragged into a plot concocted by a 4,000-year-old, very cranky Mesopotamian goddess, Kammani, who plans on ruling the world. The three women are descendents of the three main goddesses of a band of seven that are required to perform the take-over ritual. Abby, Daisy, Shar, dogs and romantic interests need to team up to find a way to stop her.


The first few chapters were a bit slow going, but things eventually picked up and I thought the book was cute and funny.
I found parts of the plot, especially why Kammani was summoned, to be clever and original.
Loved the talking dogs.

I have read one of the books mentioned in here, Coprology, which was also very entertaining. 

The DAW 30th Anniversay Science Fiction Anthology

As usual with any collection of short stories I enjoyed some more than others.

My favourites were The Sandman, The Tinman and The BettyB by C.J. Cherryh

Jaguar shifter, Solonge survived the annihilation of her family and friends perpetrated by the ruthless males of her species. Solonge now fights a guerilla war against the Jaguar men - stealing back captives and working to wipe their evil from the world. Unsurprisingly, Solonge's experiences with men in general are not good, and she is also distrustful of domineering Carpathian males - her cousin is mated to one of the Delacruz brothers. But in Solonge's dreams she has created the perfect man, sexy and strong to be a partner to her but one who will also allow her to be a woman in addition to a warrior.


Slow at the beginning, with a lot of going over what I already knew from previous books in the series, but once they were in the cave things heated up and the story flew.

It has sparked my interest in this series again. 

The Face of a Stranger by Anne Perry

He wakes up in a London hospital in terrible pain. It's the nineteenth century, when hospitals kill as many people as they cure. He doesn't know how he got there or who he is. His very face in the mirror is the face of a stranger.

Only when his boss appears at his bedside does he learn his name and profession: William Monk, police detective.

Out of fear of seeming incompetent and/or losing his livelihood, Monk hides his memory loss from his landlady, his sister and his professional associates. Back at the station, he's given a difficult and sensitive case, the brutal murder of Major Joscelin Grey, and he struggles to solve it with no knowledge of his own skills. 


The story is a good one,complete with family scandals, romantic elements and Victorian ambiance.


 Full of suspense, an interesting story, and was hard to put down. 

I loved the setting, the characters and the mystery. 

Forbidden Fantasy by Tiffany White

Zoe left her husband and went to Paris.  There she met Grey, her fantasy man.
Will she go back to her husband , who she still loves or will she stay with Grey?

She goes back to her husband...who turns out to be Grey....surprise, surprise!

The blurb sounded much better than the book turned out to be.

Can You Keep A Secret? by Sophie Kinsella

It's the usual somewhat clueless heroine gets into embarrasing situations and is finally saved by a night in shining armour (of course he has to prove himself worthy first).


 A light, chic-lit read. Didn't really do it for me.
